Australia’s eminent contemporary dance company is coming to HOTA in July. Sydney Dance Company’s ab [Intra] is the latest full-length work created by Artistic Director Rafael Bonachela. Meaning ‘from within’ in Latin, the concept behind ab [intra] began with ideas drawn from improvisations, experimentations and ideas from the Company dancers. The Company’s website describes ab [intra] as “a journey into a world of exquisite athleticism and human connection.”
The music score is an integral layer to Sydney Dance Company’s contemporary productions. Nick Wales has a created a brand-new score fusing electronic composition to Latvian composer Peteris Vasks’ Presence – a cello concerto with full symphony big sounds. “Music is a very important component of any piece I create, for ab [Intra] I wanted to bring two of the musical styles that I love together in the same work: contemporary classical with powerful strings, and intricate electronic composition,” says Bonachela.
David Fleischer (set and costume design), and Damien Cooper (lighting design) will again bring their creative edge and atmospheric intrigue to this new production.
Contemporary dance draws out emotions and gives you the excitement of not knowing what’s coming next. Sydney Dance Company describes contemporary dance as “being open to your own personal interpretation – you can view it in the same way you experience art and ask yourself how it makes you feel.”
