When you are greeted at the funky venue door by an adorable French Bulldog and the sounds of the simply awesome Benny D Williams, you know you’re in for a fun night. The venue is the quirky and inviting creative space, Mo’s Desert Clubhouse in Burleigh. Benny D Williams, epic as ever, is warming the stage and the early chilled crowd in advance for Banks Of The Beautiful. The night is mostly about them – the launch of the Gold Coast duo’s new single ‘Joy’ – and once they hit the stage it was ALL about them. Actually, the intimate venue struggled to contain the flair of singer Lou Star.
Lou was nothing short of spellbinding: a true performer, next level showwoman, and a person clearly doing what she is made for. The single is called ‘Joy’ and you could feel that pouring out with every perfectly nailed note and cheeky audience interaction. The attitude and costume changes through the show channelled pop icons Lady Gaga and Pink, even if it did leave drummer Andy Woollard casually chatting to the crowd between songs. It was dramatic, exuberant and the beats were infectious. The duo are well seasoned performers, with Andy having toured with bands like Pearl Jam and Lou having played Big Day Out, and each song was a flawless display of their abilities.
If you’re into synth/beat/drum backed high energy pop then go get the Banks Of The Beautiful single ‘Joy’. Even if you’re not, you should check it out or get to a live show. It’s not my usual musical genre but damn, I had fun!
