Wanna know where to see the best local talent when Bleach* Festival opens this week? There’s no shortage, that’s for sure. In fact, there’s so many options we felt the need to break it down for Gold Coast music lovers?
Here’s our top picks for Bleach* Festival 2018, which runs 29 March – 15 April.
Feast on Fifth, Saturday 31 March
Palm Beach will host an all-senses assault this weekend with a convoy of food trucks and two big stages for kids of all ages. The feast runs 4.00 – 9.00pm and Harry J Hart opens the main stage with Tully John & Liza-Jane, Leopold’s Treat and Casey Barnes keeping things kicking through the night.
Queensland Music Stage, Festival 2018, 4 – 15 April
There’s literally a festival every night of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games and Bleach* and Festival 2018 have collaborated to showcase the best of Queensland music on its very own stage in Broadbeach. Every single night you can see some of the Gold Coast’s best talent (as well as artists visiting from all over the state) show international visitors what they’ve got. We’re talking the likes of Amy Shark, Paces, Busby Marou, Tijuana Cartel, Kate Miller-Heidke, Ella Fence, Troy Cassar Daley, Bobby Alu and tonnes more. Get the musical low-down on both the Bleach*-curated Queensland Music Stage and the Surfers Paradise main stage here.
Live at the CBD Street Party, every day from 5 April
There’s a street party in Southport every day between Thursday 5 and Sunday 15 April and local music is front and centre. The stage will rock every day between 12.30 – 5.30pm with an absolutely mental lineup of Gold Coast acts performing every day. We’re talking the likes of IVEY, The Delicates, Peach Fur, Clawmachine, Hazel Mei, Katie Who, Athena Joy, Donny Love, Hannah Rose, The Ruiins, Phil Barlow, San Mei, Th’Fika and Benny D Williams. It’s impossible to list all the set times here, so pop on over to the Bleach* website to get the day-to-day rundown.
Bleach Electrified, Saturday 7 April
Did you ever think you’d see Confidence Man busting out their infamous moves right on the beach at Surfers Paradise? Classic sign that Bleach* is in da house. It’s not technically local, but come on, Confidence Man with Electric Fields and Michelle Xen delivering pop-art on the sand? You probably don’t want to miss this. Bleach* Electrified runs 7 – 11.00pm on Saturday 7 April at the Festival 2018 main stage on Surfers Paradise beach.
Churaki, Thursday 12 April
Something a little out of the box for usual gig-goers, this production, which has its world premiere at Bleach* Festival is an epic music production telling the story of Churaki – an Aboriginal man heralded as Gold Coast’s first surf lifesaver. Commissioned and produced here on the Gold Coast, it’s a full night of entertainment combining traditional ceremony, ancient sounds of Traditional language, compelling music heater and a cyclonic set by Australian surf rock legends The Break – which includes members of Midnight Oil, Hunters & Collectors and Violent Femmes. It all goes down on Thursday 12 April from 7.00 – 11.00pm. You can read our interview with performer and cultural adviser Kyle Slabb here. Seriously, this will be one of those moments cemented in the City’s cultural history. You should go.
Coast Acoustics, Sunday 15 April
Beginning ten years ago as a labour of love for the Gold Coast Acoustics Music Club, this year Bleach* Festival takes over programming with a stellar lineup of the city’s best acoustic alt-country and gypsy talent. Joining USA visitors Allensworth for Coast Acoustics, which is held at Country Paradise Parklands from 1.00 – 6.00pm will be Hussy Hicks, Karl S Williams and Felicity Lawless.
There’s plenty more happening as part of Bleach* Festival. The Farm have a bunch of shows, there’s installations and dance and theatre. The Festival runs 29 March – 15 April, so you haven’t got much time to get your head around the program, which you can do at the Bleach* website.
