Dennis Locorriere still finds it astounding that people want to talk to him after all these years!
Who’s he kidding! Dennis Locorriere is the legendary lead singer of iconic 70s supergroup Dr Hook. Sylvia’s Mother, Only 16, When You’re In Love With A Beautiful Woman, Baby Makes Her Blue Jeans talk, and talk he did. In fact, once Dennis gets a run on, he’s literally hard to stop, so I just pressed “record”, lit a ciggie, kicked off my shoes and let the man on the other end of the phone talk.
“I’m just so very thankful that people still wanna hear what I’m up to. Surprised, yes, but very thankful,” he said.
Dr Hook, at the height of their career, provided the soundtrack to people’s lives. Mine as well. To this Dennis replies “no doubt it’s a great body of work.”
“You realise people are still congratulating you on stuff you did when you were in your 20s and 30s. But I respect it because it’s probably the biggest thing I’ve ever done and will probably ever do. But ya know I also toured for 10 years as a solo artist, just me and my guitar and I wanted people to go, hey, there’s the guy from Dr Hook, look what he’s doing now.”
I got three solo albums I’m really proud of, and a book of poetry, but it came back around last year that Universal has acquired the bulk of the Dr Hook catalogue, and they’ve asked me to put together 40 of my favourite tracks for this new album, Timeless. I had to go back and listen to all of them all over again, so there was my re-education to the “Hook” stuff and there was some stuff I didn’t like, even then, and still don’t like, but what I did like was… it made me start thinking, gee this would make an interesting show”
And that’s exactly what Dennis is doing. He’s bringing the Dr Hook Timeless album shows Down Under.
“Overall it’ll be a good evening,” he said of the show. “Very entertaining and there’s something a little bit special in the shows only for the Australian audience. But you’ll have to come along and see for yourself.”

The Fast 5 in 5 with Dennis Locorriere from Dr Hook
- What’s the one thing you can’t live without?
Humour. Laughing. Boy I’d be in tough shape if I couldn’t laugh at most things.
- Which classic American song do you wish you had written?
Anything from Paul Simon. He’s just brilliant. I couldn’t name just one.
- What is your favourite thing to do to relax or unwind?
Read or sit and think. I’m a pretty hyperactive guy and I don’t sleep much so doing nothing at all is relaxing for me.
- What’s the best advise you’ve ever been given?
Um, a stage director from a play I was doing once, I wasn’t really feeling up to doing the show and he said “don’t push yourself, don’t struggle with being ready, if you’re going out there, just go out there. He was right.
- What do you think you’d be doing for a living if you hadn’t of been in Dr Hook?
Oh I don’t know. I really don’t know. I’d be still doing something musically though, I think or at least a creative type, yes, that’s what I’d be doing.
