You may have heard of a little thing called the City of Gold Coast’s Music Action Plan 2019-2021. It’s a thorough plan aimed at helping home-grown acts hone their craft, attracting established music businesses to the Gold Coast and supporting local music venues to thrive, all in the name of establishing Gold Coast’s national and global reputation on the music scene.
A key action in the plan is to develop the skills of artists and music industry peeps, and one of the ways this is going to be covered is via a new Business of Music course, set to be delivered by TAFE Queensland, Gold Coast.
This brand new course will connect students with mentors and respected members of the industry in order to take their music business goals, skills, knowledge and networks to the next level. The course is focused on developing the critical business skills necessary to sustain a long and prosperous career in the music industry.
Topics covered include:
- common music business contracts
- royalties and income streams
- how copyright can work for you
- keeping your books in order
- taking the scary out of tax
- how to market your project
- how to distribute your music for streaming.
Business of Music is for Gold Coast music professionals from across the spectrum of the industry, who understand the importance of a strong network and value continual professional development. In conjunction with gaining new skills and knowledge, and being mentored, participants will receive access to a wide variety of networks and resources, such as attendance at Bigsound and a subscription to Music Industry Inside Out.
The cost of the course is $1,340, however the first $1,000 will be covered by the Music Action Plan, making the total cost for eligible students just $340. (The course is open to Gold Coast who are Australian Citizens or Permanent Residents, currently in the music industry.)
Limited places are available. The course will run for 12 weeks, each Tuesday from 9 July to 1 October, from 4.00pm to 6.30pm at TAFE Coomera campus, 198 Foxwell Road Coomera.
