Coffee review: The Wandering Bean

Miami Marketta and Palm Beach Currumbin Markets

What was your favourite Christmas present last year? Going the full “treat yo’self”, for Mella Lahina it was the purchase of The Wandering Bean Coffee Cart and her emergence into the exciting (and exceedingly caffeinated) world of working for herself.

Having worked for the previous owners, when the opportunity came up to buy The Wandering Bean Mella jumped at the chance.

“It was a spontaneous idea, which is pretty much how I roll,” she informs us. Impulsive decisions aside, the business has been embraced by her family with her brother, parents and kids helping out when they can. Mella soon reveals her master plan to us.

“The kids are my little slaves, so as they get older they can learn the ropes and then run the cart and I can put my feet up” she jokes.

It is Mella’s humour and easy-going nature that has earned her the name “the coffee therapist”, a person who people find it easy to open up to as they wait for their favourite brew.

“I love meeting people, love finding out what they are all about and coffee is a great ice breaker,” she reports. Mella has found people feel comfortable talking to her about their problems, and she has found it feels good to lend an ear as she makes them their favourite cuppa.

Putting her own stamp on the previously minimalist interior, The Wandering Bean is now filled with music posters from Beatniks records, surfing photos and even sports a local gig guide on the door.

“I feel so cliché, but they are my three passions: music, surfing and coffee all under one roof” says Mella.

Currently brewing O Espresso coffee, Mella is on the hunt for even more exciting beans to serve up alongside the always delicious pies and sausage rolls from Byron Gourmet Pies.

The Wandering Bean can be found weekdays from 6:00am to 1:00pm at Miami Marketta, where you can even drive through to collect your coffee, and Saturdays from 6:00am to 11:30am at the Palm Beach Currumbin Markets.
