North East Arnhem Land’s Djuki Mala dancers are best known for their 2007 viral video of the troupe dancing exuberantly to ‘Zorba the Greek’. Since then the troupe have been wowing audiences worldwide juxtaposing contemporary dance styles with traditional Yolgnu culture.
Djuki Mala (meaning ‘Bird mob’ in Yolgnu) will be bringing their blend of Motown, Bollywood, techno, hip-hop, breakdance, krumping and classic numbers to the Brunswick Picture House for two shows on Saturday 8 December. Brunswick Heads is the hometown of the show’s Creative Producer, Joshua Brand, and the dancers will take up a short residency in the Byron Shire to develop a new show which will go on tour next year.
