The Great Australian Songbook took our anthems, love songs and ballads and sang them back to us in the vibrant accents of the Commonwealth.
Under the direction of globally renowned David Coulter, singers and musicians from Canada, the United Kingdom, Jamaica, Nigeria and beyond reinterpreted the songs that make us who we are. We joined Peaches, Nadine Shah, Winston McAnuff, Afrikan Boy, Patrick Wolf, The Mahotella Queens and special guests Meow Meow and Bart Willoughby in an unforgettable night of Australian music.
David Coulter kicked off the night playing ‘Waltzing Matilda’ on the saw. Patrick Wolf and Peaches delivered a rendition of the Nick Cave / Kylie Minogue duet ‘Where the Wild Roses Grow’. African Boy and Mahotella Queens performed Midnight Oil’s ‘Beds are Burning’. Peaches returned for a medley featuring ‘I Touch Myself’, ‘Hopelessly Devoted to You’ and ‘TNT’.
Other classic Australian songs covered in the incredible performance included ‘Reckless’, ‘Somebody I used to Know’, ‘Can’t Get you Out of My Head’, ‘Wild One’, ‘Precious Heart’, Into My Arms’. The Chats’ ‘Smoko’ was also included in the show. As was ‘I’ve been Everywhere, Man’.
Nice work Festival 2018.
