Food review: Home Plate Kitchen

6 Treeview Drive, Burleigh Waters Ph: 07 5535 5019

Tucked around a corner off Mattocks Road, it’s unlikely that you’d stumble across Home Plate Kitchen unless you’d previously heard about it. But there are lots of reasons why you should seek it out.

The owners of this ‘local scene’café, Jess Kaimoana and Shayne Green, owned cafés in Sydney before travelling through Asia and the US. When they chose to settle on the Gold Coast due to their love of ‘the two bs’ (the Broncos and ‘The Beach’), they started looking for a local-type venue.

“We really wanted to settle near Burleigh, but in a suburban area close by,” Shayne tells us.

With Jess the chef and Shayne the barista and front-of-house, the pair are always on the job. Pumping out ‘home plate’ scratch-baked goods with housemade sauces, both the food and service are generous and warm.

‘Happiness is homemade’ is the café’s logo, and we see it in practice.

We’ve only just taken a seat when Shayne brings a carafe of water to the table. On a hot day, it’s good, old-fashioned hospitality, so often missing from big city establishments.

Being a local café in a high-density area, Shayne knows locals by name, checking whether each one wants their usual order. From young families having a weekend lunch or tradies stopping in on their way past to a group of older ladies enjoying a slice of homemade cake with a cup of Sydney-based Mutch & More coffee, favoured by the couple from their previous cafés, everyone is made welcome.

“Everything is made in-house,” Shayne tells us, “pulled meat, burger patties, sauces such as tomato relish and hollandaise, cakes and muffins – it all comes out of our kitchen.”

With an extensive menu covering brekkie, brunch and lunch, there’s a great choice on offer for a local café.

Though there are many lunch items that pique my interest, I’ve chosen a Burrito from the menu. When it arrives, it’s enormous – an easy meal for two smaller appetites, packed with pulled pork, vegies and egg.

Also popular are the Red velvet pancakes, Vege stack, Gringo bowl, Corn fritters with guacamole and Homemade burgers.

Child and dog friendly, with great homemade food priced from $11 – $18, at Home Plate Kitchen ‘Mutch & More’ doesn’t just apply to the coffee!
