It’s such a breath of fresh air to walk into a café and be greeted warmly! Do we take it for granted? No, not at all!
How much fun do we have as diners when everyone serving us looks miserable? How much do we like being ignored in favour of younger or trendier looking clientele? Or even worse…You guessed it! We vote with our feet and wallets. So do most people, and eventually the place closes.
Time for new life and a fresh attitude. Enter Metro Coffee on a quiet stretch of Surf Parade. We’re away from the main drag of restaurants, there’s a park at the front, and I have an illicit date with my other half for lunch.
The first indication of change is the simple but funky fit out; the second, the welcoming attitude of Andrew, the new owner. There’s every indication that we should eat, drink and linger: comfortable seating, ambience and reading material – magazines and newspapers to browse through.
The single origin coffee is chocolaty and smooth, treading midline between Melbourne and the Gold Coast in intensity. There’s a homey feel to the goods on view as well. Choose from a cabinet of food to go (muffins, slices, quiche, fruit salad, croissants or filled rolls), from the winter specials board where the day’s wintry choices include soup, porridge and homemade cottage pie, or from the menu of the usual suspects for breakfast, fresh juices, and a lunch menu with lots of burgers. It’s hearty fare for a chilly winter.
We order a burger each: mine Pulled pork and house slaw on Turkish, a Wagyu beef burger on a brioche bun for the Main Squeeze. They’re huge burgers but absolutely yummy!
“How are you doing?” chirps Andrew, with a smile.
“I’m beaten!” I concede. “I’ll have to take the rest away.”
I’m not prepared for Andrew’s reply.
“Well, let me know next time you’re in, and I’ll make you a half serve.”
Well, that’s a first for me! It speaks volumes about what is important. Treat the person well, be responsive to their needs and they’ll bring you return business.
Friendly service, responsiveness to requests and needs, courtesy and grace, accessibility of venue and parking, opening hours…they’re all important, but in the end we all want to leave a place happier than when we arrived. Simple, really!
