“When the Greek messenger Pheidippides was sent to Athens to announce the Persian’s defeat in the battle of Marathon, he ran the entire distance without stopping, burst into the Athenian assembly delivered the news and then he died on the spot. Fun Run is his story!”
This year’s Bleach* Festival aims to explore the convergence of sport and art, a crossroads which holds a mirror up to Gold Coast culture. Nowhere is this theme more literally represented than in Fun Run, a free family spectacle taking place at iconic Cavill Avenue in Surfers Paradise.
Created by Melbourne artistic collaborators All The Queens Men, the installation sees Artistic Director Tristan Meecham run a gruelling 42.2km marathon live on stage on a treadmill, surrounded by hundreds of community performers, athletes, dancers, special guests and – of course – a booming soundtrack.
“All The Queens Men believe in the transformative power of participative performance,” says co-founder and performer Bec Reid.
Fun Run is joyous celebration of endurance; a large scale performance spectacle that pushes one man to the limits of his endurance.
And endurance is definitely the word. Tristan – an established artist and performer – is not a trained marathon runner, and the effort he expends to bring this piece of performance art to the public is utterly genuine. Inspired by the story of Pheidippides, the performance is designed to test and demonstrate the boundaries of human physical capabilities.
“The whole premise of the work is to celebrate the superhuman quests that every person can achieve whilst dually celebrating the incredible talents within the city/community the event is staged,” continues Bec.
“Tristan maintains a training schedule in the lead up to each edition, but the struggle is real.”
Part art, part sport, Fun Run is a community spectacle which will become a block party for the whole family. There will be over 150 local participants featured throughout the show across a range of dance, sports, martial arts and fitness practices. If you would like to take part in the flash mobs which will take part every hour on the hour during Fun Run, you can pick up the moves from the video on Bleach* Festival’s Facebook page.
Fun Run takes place from 3.30pm – 8.30pm on Saturday 8 April in Surfers Paradise.
