Gold Coast Music Awards 2018 finalists revealed

Gold Coast Music Awards 2018

Finalists for the 2018 Gold Coast Music Awards have been announced. Rock, hip-hop, punk, folk, country, blues and everything in between is covered in the announcement which includes 21 Gold Coast artists, five venues and three events.

Given the incredible year she’s just had, it’s no surprise that global pop star Amy Shark gets a berth in four categories but what might be a surprise is that Hollow Coves have been named in the same number of categories. Fairly unknown locally, Hollow Coves have been selling out shows internationally and amassing millions of digital streams of their music. Black Rabbit George and Hussy Hicks also appear in four categories, alongside artists as diverse as Rhea Robertson, Casey Barnes, The Mason Rack Band, Hammers, Wayward Suns and Tijuana Cartel.

“Country, metal, blues, hip-hop and indie pop are all covered,” said Gold Coast Music Awards Director Chloe Popa.

“It’s been such a big year for Gold Coast music,” she said, “and we’re lucky to have artists flying the flag for the city while they tour the world with their music.”

From newcomers Wayward Suns and Mekong Merchants, to rising country stars Casey Barnes and Jase Lansky, through to metal merchants In Ashes and Hammers and triple j darlings Eliza and the Delusionals and Lane Harry x Ike Campbell, the breadth and depth of Gold Coast talent entered in this year’s awards was astounding.

Donna Weston, Queensland Conservatorium Deputy Director and Chair of the independent judging panel said it was obvious the Gold Coast is not starved for musical choice.

“It was clear to all of us on the judging panel that not only was the shortlisting going to be difficult, let alone choosing winners, but that we unanimously felt honoured and excited to be part of such a dynamic and vibrant music scene,” Donna said.

“Several hours of lively discussion saw a list of finalists that any city, national or international, would be proud to call their own.”

The Awards ceremony, to be hosted by Australian radio favourite, former Triple J ‘Home & Hosed’ host, Dom Alessio, takes place in a ticketed VIP marquee on the beachfront adjacent to the festival sized stage and free live concert. And as with previous years, organisers are expecting the VIP event to sell out quickly, with tickets on sale now via Oztix.

Crowds are also expected to attend the free live outdoor concert, which this year features multi award-winning roots musician Bobby Alu and 2018 finalists Hussy Hicks, Electrik Lemonade and Eliza and the Delusionals.

Organisers have also just announced the after-party lineup at Surfers Paradise Beergarden with live entertainment from The Mason Rack Band, Being Jane Lane, Peach Fur and Lens.
