Following two massive shows at the Gold Coast Music Awards and Surfers Paradise LIVE festival last weekend, Australia’s award-winning urban outfit Hanlon Brothers have released their music video debut for double nominated track, Diamonds.
“The Diamonds video is quirky and a bit left of field, but that reflects what people have come to expect from us,” said drummer, Saia Hanlon from the band’s hometown, Burleigh.
Filmed at Swingin’ Safari on the Gold Coast, where the boys first formed in 2012 following their popular live improv nights, the video is “more of a short film than a traditional music clip.”
“We love Japanese anime, so we brainstormed with PUNCH.LIFE how we could get Japan, Diamonds, home (Burleigh) and music all in one video. Naturally, it had to be set in a karaoke lounge. We had so much fun making it.”
An Urban and Regional Song of the Year finalist at last month’s Queensland Music Awards, Diamondsis a quintessential Hanlon Brothers track featuring their signature RnB grooves and jazz improvisations but a deeper story told with the full conviction of a 42-bar rap verse by Roman MC.
“Growing up and living in such an idyllic place like Burleigh Beach, most of our songs are fun and laid back with pretty chill lyrics. Diamonds is a fun track, but it does have a stronger message of equality, about not letting racism, religion, corporate greed and drugs change our perceptions of reality.”
“Roman’s rap is an epic 42-bar verse that adds such a cool intensity to the song and really gets the message across.”
Awarded Gold Coast’s ‘Emerging Artist of the Year’ in 2015 and ‘Artist of the Year’ Finalist in 2016, Hanlon Brothers are excited to finally share their debut music video on the back of a busy two years.
“Since releasing our first album Featured in 2015, we’ve focused on playing live, developing our stage show for national and international touring, building our new Hanlon Brothers studio in Miami and writing new music.”
“Our mother also passed away in that time, which deeply affected all of us,” said Saia, “We think she’d be proud of how things are going and what we have coming up in the next couple of years.”
