Entries open for Australia’s richest photography award

HOTA is calling for entries in the 2018 Josephine Ulrick and Win Schubert Photography Award (JUWSPA).

Presented by Gallery at HOTA and supported in perpetuity by the Josephine Ulrick and Win Schubert Foundation for the Arts, JUWSPA is a valuable platform for established and emerging Australian photographers to showcase their work.

Introduced in 2002, the award is considered one of the most significant for contemporary Australian photographic practice.

Gallery at HOTA Director, Tracy Cooper-Lavery said the calibre of entries grows stronger every year and in 2018 expects the Award to present the diversity of contemporary photographic practice, themes and approaches while showcasing some exceptional talent.

“JUSWPA is one of the most respected prizes on the Australian art calendar. It continues to promote and seek out the best in contemporary photography and is the foundation of the Gallery’s growing photography collection. An important aspect of the prize is presenting emerging artists alongside some of Australia’s most recognised artists. With no restrictions on subject matter the prize is representative of Australian contemporary art and life.

“Through the perpetual support of the Josephine Ulrick and Win Schubert Foundation for the Arts the Gallery has acquired works by some of Australia’s eminent and emerging photographers including previous winners Darren Sylvester, Shaun Gladwell, Polixeni Papapetrou, Anne Ferran, Polly Borland and Owen Leong,” Tracy said.

The 2018 awards will be judged by Cherie McNair, Director and CEO Australian Centre for Photography.

JUWSPA is one of Australia’s most generous photography awards with a prize value of up to $50,000. The winner receives a $25,000 acquisitive cash prize and the Gallery will award up to an additional $25,000 in acquisitions to a selection of finalists.
