Coolangatta / Tweed teenage surfing sensation Kobie Enright has earned her chance to take on the best surfers in the World at the Rip Curl Pro. The 18 year old has just won her sponsor trials for the event to nab a spot in the main event, and has had a great year so far, winning the Burleigh Pro, and finishing runner-up at the Tweed Pro last month.
Kobie, having come through the ranks as a tiny young girl, is now a 5’11 amazon, with an elegant style reminiscent of Stephanie Gilmore (with a touch more power).
Enright is pretty happy with her win.
“I’m so overwhelmed with excitement to be in such a huge event! I’ve looked up to Mick (Fanning) and Joel (Parkinson) and Steph (Gilmore) my whole life watching them surf this perfect wave. So to be able to surf a CT heat out at Bells is still crazy to think about. I think I’m still just so excited that I’m able to surf a contest with all the girls I’ve looked up to and a wave I love!”
Kobie Enright has had great role models throughout her life, growing up at the Superbank, and as a member of the Snapper Rocks Surfriders. With her sponsor, Rip Curl, she has had the chance to surf Bells Beach a few times before.
“I’ve been coming to Bells for the last four years now and love it more and more every time,” she exclaims.
“I have a couple Victorian families that take me in as their own which is super nice, so always love coming to see them and finally be in some colder weather.” (A bit tongue in cheek there)
“I would love to thank Rip Curl for the amazing opportunity and all my friends and family that have supported me helped me get to where I am, without the support of them I wouldn’t be here!”
So it has been a great year for Kobie Enright, but when asked her what were her goals for the rest of the year:
“Of course the ultimate goal is to qualify for the World Tour, but once I found out I was in the trials (for Bells), all I wanted to do was win so I could surf a CT EVENT at one of my favourite breaks. Just taking every heat and contest as it comes for the rest of the year and hoping for the best!”
The Rip Curl Pro has a great history of wildcards winning the event, with Nicky Wood, Joe Engel, and Mick Fanning all winning from the trials. Watch this space, the event’s waiting period has started already, and with some solid waves Kobie Enright may just rattle some cages.
