It’s an early Christmas for northern Gold Coasters, with the eagerly-awaited second stage Gold Coast Light Rail set to commence its service this weekend, well ahead of schedule.
Sunday 17 December will see a family fun day and free travel across the network while Monday 18 December is the date the revenue service will begin, just in time for holiday revellers to take advantage of the extended Parkwood to Helensvale route.
Assistant Minister and Member for Gaven Meaghan Scanlon discusses the opening and family fun day activities.
“GCLR has connected our city like never before and it’s incredibly exciting to have the second stage ready to go,” Ms Scanlon said. “Stage Two will open well ahead of schedule and in plenty of time for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.
“I want to invite Gold Coasters and visitors alike to come down on Sunday, ride the G for free and enjoy a great day out. There will be face-painting, food stalls and goodie bags and the opportunity to be one of the first people ever to ride our new trams.”
In addition, NightQuarter in collaboration with G: link will be creating station parties at Helensvale and Parkwood, featuring local musicians from 9.00am.
And as if that’s not enough, once you’ve raided your goodie bag and danced to some tunes, you can catch a free tram to Helensvale station for a Sundae Ice Cream Social at NightQuarter! Cool off in style with pop up ice cream trucks, and next-level ice cream treats from their dessert vendors. From ice cream donut cones, dragon’s breath liquid nitrogen puffs, to soft serve, to fries dipped in ice cream (you secretly love it), you can indulge in all your sweet obsessions. They are opening from 12.00pm to celebrate the special milestone.
The light rail stage two completion means that from Sunday, commuters will be able to travel from Helensvale through to Broadbeach on the light rail, creating an easy link between the Gold Coast and Brisbane.
Free launch activities will run from 6.00am until 2.00pm on Sunday 17 December at Helensvale station (official opening event), Parkwood station, Parkwood East station, Gold Coast University Hospital station (GCUH) and NightQuarter.
