Local breweries winning at the craft beer game

Let it never be said that Gold Coasters don’t enjoy a good brew, and we certainly have plenty of quality local ales to choose from.

Each December, Great Australian Beer Spectacular (GABS) runs the influential Hottest 100 Craft Beers of the Year poll which sees thousands of beer fans all over Australia and New Zealand vote for their favourite beers of the year. The 2018 poll saw our local breweries making a strong showing, taking out first and second place as well as a swathe of other numbers in the countdown.

Gold Coast’s Balter Brewing Company’s enormously popular XPA took out the top spot for the second consecutive year. The Currumbin brewery also claimed sixth and seventh positions for its Double IPA and India Pale Ale respectively, and 65 for its Pilsner.

Byron Brewery Stone & Wood‘s Pacific Ale took home the number two spot, with their Cloud Catcher coming in at a respectable 28.

Black Hops Brewing (the reigning Australian International Beer Awards’ champion small brewer), brought home the goods with three beers making the list: Super Hornet (88), Hornet (43), and Pale Ale (14).

Gold Coast’s Burleigh Brewing Co Twisted Palm was recognised in the number 48 spot with its Bighead in number 71, while Fortitude Brewing Co (Mount Tambourine) took out number 54 for its Pacer. The latter was notably recognised for its pale ale – with an ABV of just 2.8 percent, the Pacer was the only light beer on a list dominated by heftier brewing styles.

Congratulations to all of our hardworking brewers on their continued success. Cheers!
