Mauboy takes out NIMA Artist of the Year, Sultan Album of the Year

What a massive year for Jessica Mauboy. On top of leading the handover of the Commonwealth Games from Glasgow to Gold Coast, the GC lass (well, she did go to primary school here) has now taken out a prestigious and much sought after national award.

Jessica has been named the National Artist of the Year at the National Indigenous Music Awards (NIMAs), announced this weekend in the Northern Territory. Jess accepted her award from LA, where she is recording her new album.

Dan Sultan (pictured) also continues his rise, taking out the National Album, Song and Cover Art of the Year.

Mark Smith, Executive Director of MusicNT, the organisers of the NIMAs said the Indigenous music scene is a force to be reckoned with.

The Awards have played an instrumental role in shining a light on the scene and providing a national platform for recognition,” he said. “One of the highlights is the diversity of this year’s line-up which truly showcases the breadth of talent across the Indigenous Music Industry.”

The National Indigenous Music Awards were held in Darwin on Friday 15 August with an incredible lineup of Indigenous talent including The Mills Sisters. Aaron Pedersen (MC), Dan Sultan with his full band including horn section, Nathan Lovett-Murray [Payback Records] featuring New Talent of the Year Briggs joined by Jimblah, The Last Kinection and the NIMA 2014 triple j Unearthed NIMA Competition winner Philly. Tom E. Lewis, Tjintu Desert Band, the Desert Divas and  Djuki Mala [aka Chooky Dancers] also performed at the award ceremony.
