Gold Coast City Gallery exhibition Signs of the Time opens at The Arts Centre Gold Coast on 18 February 2017.
To celebrate this street art-inspired exhibition, Gold Coast City Gallery has commissioned UK-born, Gold Coast-based artist Sarah Beetson to design a skin wrap for a FIAT Art Car, provided by Bruce Lynton Automotive Group. Sarah’s large and varied body of local and international work explores body image, gender themes and subcultures, and the politics and perversities of popular culture.
The design is inspired by music legend Prince’s song Sign O’ The Times.
“It’s been playing a lot in my studio since Prince’s death earlier this year, preceded by David Bowie and followed by Leonard Cohen – all huge influences on my work and development as an artist,” explained Sarah.
All three musicians feature in Sarah’s design, accompanied with lyrics from Sign O’ The Times.
“2016 has been a crazy one indeed,” Sarah continued.
“Not only have we lost several of the biggest creative forces in music and the arts, but it seems like a year when the human race is spiralling out of control politically… It feels like there is so much conflict and division among us all. The lyrics from the song seem to really reflect current events, despite the fact they were written almost 30 years ago.
“The arts are even more imperative as a fundamental respite for the people in this divided cultural climate, and I’m very excited to have a hand in a show about street artists, who are the key players in making art accessible to the public.”
Gallery Director Tracy Cooper-Lavery is enthusiastic about the project.
“In Sarah’s work there is a great connection between the images and the exhibition. Plus, I love any connection between art and music!”
The street art-inspired car will cruise around the Gold Coast for three months, from 3 January to 10 April 2017. If you see the Fiat500 Art Car, take a photo and include one or any of the hash tags: #FiatArtCar #BruceLynton #GoldCoastFiat #SignsGC #theartscentregc
