NY dance music royalty Nancy Whang @ Elsewhere show announced

If your a fan of LCD Soundsystem (and if your not…what’s wrong with you?!) then you, along with other underground dance music fanatics will be thrilled to hear the news that Nancy Whang will be performing a DJ set at Elsewhere niteclub, the day after her Splendour in the Grass performance.  Considering Queensland tends to miss out on all the SITG side shows, this is great news indeed.

Nancy Whang, a key figure in the rise of DFA Records remains faithful to the post-punk party aesthetic upon which DFA was founded and since LCD Soundsystem disbanded back in 2011, we expect her DJ sets to fill the void that LCD left behind. And if your not hitting SITG this year (like me) this news has taken the sting and sadness out of not attending the festival this year.

I caught up with Trent Gardiner, one of the owners of Gold Coast based independent record and artist management label Strange Yonder, to find out how and why he wanted this event to happen in the first place.

How did you meet Nancy Whang?

I met Nancy last October in New York while I was in town for CMJ music conference. I had organised to meet with her while she was djing at a Bazaar on the Lower East Side. We then walked 5 or 6 blocks to go top up her parking. Nancy has a semi-famous dog named Doris who I got to walk for a few blocks while we talked over our old favourite disco edits.

How did you manage to talk Nancy into coming to Australia?

I pitched Nancy to Splendour when I arrived home from New York last year. It was up the air for a couple of months. Then they contacted my 48 hours before the line up was going public and asked me if I could turn it round in 24 hours. Safe to say I worked for 24 hours straight, but we managed to get it done. We have a nice little east coast run happening starting in Melbourne on the 23rd, finishing on the Gold Coast on the 26th.

Why did you pursue her in the first place?

The pursuit of Nancy stems from a long standing love of the DFA imprint. I have loved and followed that label for over a decade now. This tour is just the start of a DFA revival in Australia. Stay tuned.
