It’s a feast! NightQuarter announces Festival 2018 food and cultural program

With Festival 2018 getting set to thrill the ears, eyes and tastebuds of the world during the 2018 Commonwealth Games next year, what better spot to host a delectable food and cultural program than our very own NightQuarter? Ever since our fave northern night market confirmed their involvement, we’ve been waiting with bated breath for the full deets to drop. And now the wait is over.

The doors of NightQuarter will be open to the public from 12.00pm to 9.00pm, errryday from 5 – 14 April 2018, and will host a bold food festival program exploring food science, permaculture, urban gardening, Indigenous tradition and unexpected local flavours. Check it out below.

Eat Local at NightQuarter will combine local wines and beers, street food vendors and original live music and create a true feast for the senses. Traditional Australian cuisine will be on the menu with Clinto’s Kupmurri Aboriginal, local, organic, eco-friendly and cruelty-free fare.

The Backyard Pub Experience will celebrate fire, food, music and the great Aussie barbecue! The Jimbelung Space Indigenous Area is dedicated space offering a series of bushtucker workshops, music traditions, storytelling, language workshops, weaving and art and dance activations, while Cooking Demonstration on Native Ingredients with give a contemporary take on traditional foods inspired by health and medical benefits of Australian bush tucker.

Kids are certainly not forgotten, with Little NightQuarter Playground Workshops set to entertain in Little NightQuarter, a dedicated space designed exclusively for big and little kids. Parents can bring their tiny festival-goers to relax, play and be entertained. Located in an artificial grassed area that is fully fenced, Little NightQuarter features a free jumping castle, face painting, and daily workshops sessions from decorating waffles to wildlife encounters.  Sunshine Food Adventures focuses on “eating a rainbow” for kids, and exploring a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables along with other tasty ingredients.

The Gourmet Taste Trail involves a guided or self-guided tour of some of the delicious street and restaurant food on offer at NightQuarter, such as desserts, bar + cheese platter, BBQ and beer, or traditional high tea. Celebrate with Champagne on opening night with a champagne masterclass, and join a world cheese expert as you taste your way through Australia’s best five versus the best five cheese from the rest of the world with Blessed are the Cheesemakers.

What’s that you say? You want to get a little scientific? Look no further than Botanical Mixologist, a hands on masterclass using local micro-herbs and botanicals. An experienced mixologist will teach you how to turn herbs, plants and flowers into show-stopping mix-ins for beverages, while Scientist in the Kitchen will explore how science is changing the culinary landscape with physicist and science communicator Dr Joel Gilmore. The Brewer, The Distiller and The Scientist explores the science behind the creation of beer and spirits, and the synchronicity between brewing and distilling.

That’s not all, folks, with Beer and Barbecuing Masterclass and Demystifying Fish and Seafood on the Barbie set to make you the envy of your neighbourhood. Married with Chocolate will open some eyes to our favoured indulgences, while the Australian Native Wildflower workshop and Craft & Floral experience explore Australian flora. The Soil to Supper Workshop Program will provide an organic and holistic approach to gardening and growing fresh food, or you can simply spend a lazy afternoon listening to Pacific beats,
sipping cocktails and feasting on a smorgasbord of tropical food at the Pacificana Long Lunch.

The music and cultural program is jam-packed with exciting performances, kicking off with Opening Night of the NightQuarter Festival that includes Yugambeh dancers, Electrik Lemonade and more.

The daredevils of Deja Voodoo will entertain the whole family while Good Vibrations sees 42 Band, The Twine and Elska explore rhythm, tempo and technology. Have a Spanish encounter with Flamenco featuring Felicity Lawless, or a Fijian one with Pacific Dance, featuring VOU and Jesswar.

Culture Strong celebrates local, traditional dance, singing, food, art, native flora and more.

Back to Nature celebrates local certified organic, raw and sustainable food. Then reality meets fantasy in a wordless live installation that recreates a bucolic country scene in a typical urban setting, Les Mouton.

Bullhorn and Hot Potato Band will come together for Brass Off!, a night of hard-hitting horns, funky melodies and good times. Multi-talented musician Harry J Hart will be busking his hart (sorry!) out, as will scene stalwart Matty Rogers and Colt Seavers Band.

Whatever your flavour, there’s something to suit all palates. For the full program and further information, visit the NightQuarter website.
