It seems as though Sam Foster and Hayden Jones can do no wrong at the moment. The co-owners of Gold Coast based theatre company, Shock Therapy Productions, recently took out Best Independent Production and Best Director for their rendition of The Pillowman at the prestigious Matilda Awards in Brisbane. Considering the Matilda Awards promote the excellence of southeast Queensland’s theatre industry and are on par with both the Sydney Critics’ Awards and Victoria’s Green Room Awards, it’s a significant achievement that both Sam and Hayden are quite ecstatic about.
The momentum continues as they co-direct The Arts Centre’s 2016 Youth Theatre Project FLOOD by Chris Isaacs, which is sure to create an extraordinary theatrical experience not to disappoint. The play chosen for the Youth Theatre Project was nominated for the 2013 Helpmann Award. It follows the story of six close companions who set off on a camping adventure to the north west of Australia, when an unexpected turn of events results in terrible, life changing consequences.
Hayden says ‘We chose this play because it is interesting in both content and style. It asks questions about cross-cultural understanding, connection to Country, and prejudice. But it doesn’t jam anything down your throat. There are no ‘good guys’ or ‘bad guys’. There are just characters and they are all very real and are treated with sensitivity.’
Sam adds ‘Stylistically it offers some exciting challenges. It is a tight ensemble piece, with dynamic storytelling, requiring us to be inventive with minimal set and props. We are really looking forward to working so closely with this great young cast.’
