Brisbane four-piece Shag Rock ended 2016 with a bang. Their single Sunbleached Girl clocked over a quarter of a million Spotify streams and the east coast tour gained them a tonne of new fans.
Sophomore album Barefoot, which we’re proud to premiere ahead of its launch tomorrow will no doubt help the lads continue their winning streak. Recorded with long-time supporter Ian Haug (Powderfinger) it was mixed by Nick Didia (Rage Against The Machine) and reflects a classic surf-rock sound as well as a smattering of deeper lyricism.
In addition to the album, Shag Rock have released a new video for first single off the album Road Trip. The track is a meandering journey “chasing sunsets”, like all good road trips.
There’s try to get some sleep amongst the ocean breeze and whispering trees.
Shag Rocker Alex Wilson says blood, sweat and beers were poured into the album.
“We couldn’t be happier with the end product,” he said.
“We feel like we’ve finally zoned into a coherent band sound that translates through the album,” he said. “It was designed to bring some tasty flavours and encapsulate the chilled surf rock vibe.”
Barefoot sees the band’s sound progress and you can hear the influence the recording process (ie. working with such industry legends) has had on their sound.
My personal favourite on the album is Lip Addiction. Like Road Trip, it showcases the band’s indie-rock roots with a catchy chorus. Shag Rock know how to craft a catchy ear-worm, so be warned.
