Tasmanian senator flags super trawler ban

The Australian government will move to ban super trawlers or factory freezer vessels over 130 metres, according to a press release from Tasmanian Senator and Secretary for the Minister for Agriculture Richard Colbreck.

“The government will introduce regulations under the Fisheries Management Act to give effect to this decision,” Senator Colbreck says.

He says the government will use the same definition of supertrawlers as Labor’s and ENGO’s.

A ban had been in place until mid-November sparking environmental campaigns to have it reinstated.
