This is BLANK GC’s ultimate guide to Splendour in the Grass 2017! My name is Emma and I’ll be taking you through all the do’s and don’t of the festival, and where to be, what to do and who to see so you can get the most out of the weekend. If you lucked out on getting tickets in the mad rush, keep checking our website for reviews, and Instagram for live updates throughout the festival weekend.
Tips & Tricks:
Pace Yourself: You have three whole days and nights to get through, so before you reck yourself on the first night, check yourself and make sure you’re not gonna be disappointed that you missed your favourite band on Saturday because you were still recovering from Friday.
Stay Friendly: Everyone at a festival is there to have a good time and honestly, my favourite thing about a festival is meeting new people and making friends with your neighbours whether you’re camping next to them or just stood in line getting some festival grub. Make sure you’re always be up for a chat, discuss the best act you’ve seen so far and who knows, you might find the love of your life standing in line for some nachos.
Cash is so 2016: This year Splendour has decided to scrap the drink tickets (thank god) and are going to be operating almost totally on card and mobile payments using the square contactless chip reader, which is essentially and groovy way of saying paypass. There will be limited ‘cash’ lines and punters will be unable to draw cash out from the bar, but there will be ATM’s around the festival if you feel naked without a bit of cash on you.
Places to Check Out:
Take a Break from the Music: If you want break from the never ending tunes then Splendour has you covered. There’s the Comedy Club with triple j alumni Matt Okine if you’re up for a laugh or the Science Tent which will teach you the kinky science behind BDSM if you’re intrigued. Splendour in the Craft has a jam packed schedule for creating the best upscaled and handmade totes, night-lights, t-shirts and much much more. Don’t forget to check out the art installations around the site as well, but I’m pretty sure it’s gonna be hard to miss them!
Tipi Forest: The Tipi Forest at Splendour in the Grass is a creative wonderland that is sure to get you heart pumping and you blood flowing. The forest is filled with Dj’s, dancers, artists and music producers, and is a definite favourite at splendour as it keeps coming back year after year. My suggestion is to go after the big bands finish to experience the full weird and wonderful potential of the Tipi Forest.
Bands, Bands, Bands:
Top Picks for Friday: BANKS & Julia Jacklin.
BANKS has continually wowed me since releasing her first album, Goddess, in 2014 and has only played Australia ONCE which I managed to miss out on. Now returning to showcase her second studio album, The Altar, I am more than excited to witness the sultry songstress win over splendour one note at a time. Julia Jacklin is a folk singer songwriter with the ability to tell a story like no other. She released her album ‘Don’t Let The Kids Win’ in 2016 and has left a mark on everyone who has caught a listen of her songs. I have lots of friends who really aren’t into folk at all but LOVE Jacklin purely because she writs such good songs, so go check her out! You won’t regret it!
Top Picks for Saturday: Gretta Ray & Royal Blood.
Gretta Ray has stormed our triple J airways last year after winning Unearthed High with her catchy and emotion packed song Drive. I’m keen to see what other hits she had hidden up her sleeve. Royal Blood came to splendour in 2015 and sadly due to some bad planning on my part, I missed their set that was dubbed incredible by more than one of my friends. Now that I’m a little older, a little wiser, and much better at time management (hopefully), I’ll be front row to witness the two piece deliver another jaw dropping show.
Top Picks for Sunday: Amy Shark & Willaris. K
Amy Shark is another incredible Australian success story (and from the Gold Coast!). After releasing her single ‘Adore’ Shark has been on every radio station all over Australia, sold our her first Australian headline tour, came 2nd in the Triple J Hottest 100 and just completed her first American tour, all in the space of a year. Willaris. K is a triple J Unearthed and soon to be Triple J favourite after releasing his single Alchemy. His talents lie in creating some of the most heartfelt and emotional songs of the year without the use of lyrics, and I have a feeling that if you wanna go have a dance and get lost in the music, his set will be the place to be.
