The Veronicas Untouched: Interview with Lisa Origliasso

The chains of pop customs have been thrown aside for The Veronicas with the band entwining a confident, layered and emotional collection of songs that gracefully showcase a new polished and bold style. Rock duo Lisa and Jess Origliasso are returning to the Gold Coast, and Blank GC’s Eden Tokatly caught up with one of the identical power team, Lisa.

Have you previously ever felt like you had to fit in a certain pop or rock mould when you were doing music years ago?

I think Jess and I have always stood our ground, I think maybe because we had each other we didn’t care what anyone said. People will pressure you, but I don’t think we ever succumbed to that pressure because we had such a strong sense of self. We fought really hard for it, we had each other, which is such a blessing.  This industry is crazy and I think that’s why we’ve done it for 10 years. We are doing it for our love of music, we’re not doing it for a quick fix. We’re in a different place now but our hearts have always been in the music, we just want to get lost in the studio and create. I think its important for artists today to have a really strong sense of self before coming out because you have to battle everyone else’s’ opinion. You better know who you are and stand up for it, because before you know it you’ll be on stage dressed in something you hate and speaking someone else’s words and singing someone else’s song. And that’s never going to make you feel good.

Social media wasn’t a big influence when you were last promoting music. How has it changed your relationship with your fans?

It changed everything, especially even the last record when we were promoting it obviously from the huge difference between the release of The Secret Life of… and the platform we had then was when MySpace was just starting to blow up. MySpace was such a crazy concept and now you think that the social media platform is pretty much the number one biggest platform now for getting your music heard and promoting yourself as an artist. Obviously its fantastic, we’re on everything Twitter, Snapchat etc.  all of it. It is a fantastic way to interact and really connect on that personal level with fan and we’ve always prided ourselves in doing that anyway.

This will be your long-awaited return to the Gold Coast, do you feel your fans have changed over the years as your music has changed?

They’ve definitely gotten taller, and I haven’t and you do get a lot of fans that have grown up with us. As we’ve grown, they’ve grown. They are just beautiful people, were so lucky they are so passionate. We are very opinionated, very outspoken about the causes we believe in. We like to promote individuality and confidence. Get behind something you believe in is our message. I’m really proud of the fact that our fans have grown into humanitarians and they care, they’re compassionate and they’re empathetic. When we first got to LA, we felt really proud being Aussie’s waving that flag for two girls from Brisbane. Dream as big as you possible can because you’re dreams can come true, you never limit or doubt yourself for a second.

What can we expect at your show on the Gold Coast in May?

I thinks its been 8 or 9 years since we’ve played at the Gold Coast and it’s going to be fantastic to get back down there, after so long. Its going to be great to have it at such a beautiful venue. The Gold Coast is one of my absolute favourite places in the world, It’s going to be the ultimate Veronicas show. We might potentially play some new songs from the new record we’ve been working on and we’re definitely going to be playing some of the older songs, we will have to dig back into the archives and throw out a couple of songs that we haven’t done in a long time. It’s going to be a pretty cool show, we’re bringing out a cool band, so there’s going to be some really special moments.

Having been in the industry for more than 10 years, you’ve experienced and seen a lot. What has been the highlight of your career?

It has been 10 years since we released the Secret life of Veronicas, I think part of every single day in the sense that I get to do what I love to do with my soul mate, my sister. We get to travel all over the world and the thing that makes me feel the best is hearing how the music effects people. Hearing peoples’ stories and getting to meet them and see if its helped them do something. We’ve literally had people come up to us and say “your music saved my life” and to know that you can create something that means so much to someone and can help them in some ways or make them feel something, is the greatest. It’s why we do what we do, I think that kind of happens daily. So to get to explore and meet people from all different cultures is truly beautiful and to be in touch with our fans and hear that from them is what really feeds the fire in me to make music. Music is powerful.  When I was young music was like magic, it was the very first art form in which I could discover who I am. To be a part of someone else’s story or someone else’s identity with the music I make is the greatest achievement or compliment that I could ever get doing this.

You Ruined Me was you first single in 7 years and went straight to the top of the charts, how did that feel?

I don’t know if there are any real words to describe it. We had been out of the public eye for a few years battling legalities of the music industry and just basically fighting to have our music heard, so to come back and just be so embraced with so much love from everyone. It was such a thrill for us and we really just felt the love.

Finally, three words to describe your other half, Jess.

Three words? God I could write a book. She’s very compassionate, charismatic and empathic. She just gives. Very enlightening, very intelligent. People don’t realise because she has this reputation of her persona on stage – that powerhouse, crazy rock chick – but the minute Jess get’s off stage she’s shy and sweet. Ten minutes with Jess and you feel like you can take on the world.
