Tourist in my Town: Broadbeach

Lovers’ retreat needed? How about a girls’ weekend? Looking for that special place to host a family dinner, or just feel like a night on the tiles with mates? When it comes to being spoilt for choice, you can’t go much further than Broadbeach.

My partner and I decided to have a little mini-break in our home town, and partake in some of the delights of Broady without having to schlep home at the end of the night. The AVANI Broadbeach seemed like the ticket for accommodation situated as it is, across the road from The Star Gold Coast and a hop, skip and a jump to the Oasis and all the shops and amenities in Broadbeach mall, with secure parking to boot.  Our one bedroom apartment was sleek, modern and had that untouched feel that you can only get at new properties. All bright whites, shiny surfaces and crisp linens. Given how new the property is we expected the somewhat restricted size that seems to be becoming a feature of more modern accommodation, however we were surprised at the amount of space in the unit. And you could definitely swing a cat in the bathroom, if you were that way inclined!

We had some time to kill before our 2pm check in so we strolled to local fave Harajuku Gyoza and Beer Stadium – seriously, what kind of weirdo doesn’t love gyozas? –  for a tasty lunch and a couple of cold ones before heading upstairs and bingeing a few eps on Netflix before dinner. (TV in bedroom = super comfort). The only trouble with dinner was choosing a place to eat. Do we go the sumptuous steaks of Moo Moo? Take an exotic trip to Meccah Bah? How about the renowned Japanese cuisine at Ten, or the gastronomical gusto of Social Eating House? The list went on. We ended up deciding on one of our favourites, the deceptively simple Double Zero pizza; a true taste of Naples on the Gold Coast.

After an incredible nights’ sleep in what has to be the comfiest hotel bed I’ve ever slept on, we woke up and found ourselves, unbelievably, keen for more food. Everyone who’s anyone will tell you that Elk Espresso is the breakfast haunt to check out in Broadbeach, so we wasted no time popping there and partaking of the rich and delightful croquettes and the highly Intsagrammable fried chicken and waffles with blackberry butter. With heavy hearts (and bellies), we came back to check out of the AVANI and end our fabulous little overnight homestay. Now with so many Broadbeach delights left to sample, all that’s left is to book the return trip.
