Bluesfest Festival Director Peter Noble says “I feel that I am delivering artists this year who have been important – even pivotal in our quarter century of existence. We are presenting those who do great shows – which is what the Festival is renowned for – plus we continue to introduce artists for the first time, who we believe will be future major performers in years to come, alongside the legends and breakthrough artists for who we have become renowned in choosing to perform on their climb to the top.”
JOSS STONE: How does that ole Blues song go … “It’s been 7 long years ….”?? Yes, it has been exactly that: 7 long years since Joss Stone rocked Bluesfest and rock it she did. It’s gonna be a mighty, mighty roar that will greet the barefoot Ms Stone on her return next Easter to help with the Bluesfest Birthday celebrations. Joss Stone has won a Grammy Award and two BRIT Awards plus collaborated on a stunning album with SuperHeavy (the supergroup put together by Mick Jagger); and her anthemic hit songs like ‘Super Duper Love’, ‘You Had Me’, ‘Dirty Man’, ‘Fell In Love With A Boy’, ‘Don’t Cha Wanna Ride’, ‘Right To Be Wrong’ and ‘Tell Me ‘Bout It’ have elevated Joss Stone to global stardom – and she is still only 26 years old !!
JOE CAMILLERI & THE BLACK SORROWS: Led by the irrepressible Joe Camilleri, The Black Sorrows continue to be one of Australia’s most successful touring bands. With anthemic songs like ‘Hold On To Me’, ‘Harley and Rose’, ‘Chained To The Wheel’, and ‘The Crack Up’ from their triple platinum albums Hold On To Me (1988), Harley and Rose(1990) and their greatest hits compilation The Chosen Ones (1993) have seen them sell well over a million albums and tour the world. Their brand new CD Certified Blue is slated to drop in March so Bluesfest will be among the first to hear it rock …. LIVE!
CHAIN: “Chain’s influence on Australian music has been enormous.” – Rolling Stone magazine. The Fathers of ‘Oz-Blues’ return to Bluesfest! Credited as being the only Blues band to have a #1 hit on the Australian charts Black’n’Blue as well as a #2Judgement, Chain founders, singer/harmonica player Matt Taylor and guitarist Phil Manning, bring long-time bassist Dirk Dubois and new drummer Trevor ‘Trapper’ Draper to Bluesfest to power through the enduring wealth and depth of their Blues catalogue, drawn from their 46 year history. Bluesfest – enjoy the founders of ‘Oz-Blues’ for Chain live is a great entertainment experience!!
TERRANCE SIMIEN AND THE ZYDECO EXPERIENCE: For nearly 30 years, GRAMMY award winning artist Terrance Simien and 8th generation Louisiana Creole has been shattering the myths about what his indigenous Zydeco Roots music is and is not. Leading hisZydeco Experience band, Simien has become one of the most respected and accomplished artists in American Roots music today. He and his band mates have performed over 7000 concerts, toured millions of miles to over 45 countries during their eventful career.
Simien is blessed with an extraordinary talent that expresses the deepest human emotions through the original instrument: The Voice Terrance Simien and the Zydeco Experience won the first ever Grammy for ‘Best Zydeco or Cajun Music Album’ in the 2008 Grammy Awards for the momentous album Live! Worldwide. The album itself was released via Aim Records from Byron Bay, the independent label owned by Bluesfest director Peter Noble, making this the first ever Grammy win for an Australian independent (non-major affiliated) record label. There are few better live performers, so make sure you groove to hisblend of New Orleans Funk-Reggae-flavoured-World-Blues-American Zydeco Roots this Easter at Bluesfest.
DYSON, STRINGER & CLOHER: “Expect tingles, goosebumps, maybe even a tear or two.” The Dwarf. “A thundering three-part musical onslaught, one you wished wouldn’t finish.” Rhythms Magazine. Three of Australia’s most lauded singer-songwriters Mia Dyson, Liz Stringer and Jen Cloher will be sharing the Bluesfest stage for a not to be missed performance. With eleven albums, ARIA Awards, Australian Music Prize short listings and countless other accolades between them, Dyson, Stringer and Cloher are three names synonymous with great songs and powerful performances. Their Bluesfest shows will feature new songs they have recently penned for these special performances as well as some favourites from each of their own critically acclaimed albums.
THE BEARDS: The Beards are returning to Bluesfest after entertaining the crowd last year with favourites such as ‘If Your Dad Doesn’t Have a Beard, You’ve Got Two Mums’, ‘You Should Consider Sex with a Bearded Man’and ‘No Beard, No Good’. The comedic rock band have gained a cult following in Australia after touring the nation relentlessly over the last few years and in 2013 played to capacity audiences throughout Canada, the USA, UK, Germany and The Netherlands. The Beards will release their fourth album mid-2014 and guess what – it will be about beards.
GLENN CARDIER AND THE SIDESHOW: He has toured with Spike Milligan and opened for Harry Chapin, Frank Zappa, Sherbet, Cheech & Chong and Manfred Mann’s Earth Band. Glenn Cardier’s latest release Old Haunts (2013) includes 42 previously unreleased demo and broadcast tracks discovered on reel to reel tapes stored in his home studio. Onstage, there are the usual trademark flashes of dark humour in his meta tag creation Jacksonville songs of stark beauty and thumping Rockabilly/Blues. There’s a touch of Beefheart in his voice, a hint of Cohen in the lyrics, a pinch of Elvis here and there. We welcome back one of Australia’s finest song writers and his band the Sideshow 11 years since he last took the Bluesfest stage.
NAHKO AND MEDICINE FOR THE PEOPLE: Nahko and Medicine For The People, delivers his message with a powerful set, ably assisted by the tribal percussionist Hope Medford and guitarist Chase Makai. It’s a musical mission to ‘create healing and activate people to change things’. Oregon-native Nahko, born a mix of Apache, Puerto Rican, and Filipino cultures, adopted into an American family and now living in Hawaii, brings his own unique and powerful meld of World, Folk and Urban Roots to Bluesfest for the very first time.
THE PUBLIC OPINION AFRO ORCHESTRA: “Get your hips ready for some serious shaking” – BEAT. Inspired by the infectious Afro-Beat music of Nigeria and its neighbours, The POAO delivers contemporary African Funk to Australian dance floors. This mammoth ensemble comprises seventeen musicians hand-picked from Melbourne’s music scene. The experience and creativity of these established musicians energises the group’s original compositions and the sound of the entire band is a force to be reckoned with. The POAO’s powerful MCs and tribal rhythms are the modern-day ‘musical weapon’ that Fela Kuti conceived of. Their conscious lyrics and West African grooves are relevant today, while remaining faithful to the message of afro-beat. A contagious and HIGH energy Bluesfest performance not to be missed!!
THE CAMBODIAN SPACE PROJECT: With songs from the ‘golden age’ of 60s Cambodian Pop added to their own dazzlingly original Khmer Psychedelic Rock, The Cambodian Space Project are growing their galaxy of star admirers, Nick Cave and Paul Kelly included, and their latest album, available soon, is a co-project with Dennis Coffey whose lead guitar work is heard on dozens of Motown Hit Records. (The same Dennis Coffey who, along with Mike Theodore, discovered Bluesfest favourite Rodriguez and played lead guitar on Cold Fact). Bluesfest – head for the stars and join The Cambodian Space Project on this Asian Rock ‘n’ Roll space odyssey.
MATTHEW CURRY: Introducing a very talented young man – 17 year old Blues guitar phenomenon Matthew Curry. Take just one listen and you actually won’t believe your ears, watch just one clip and the truly authentic gravelly blues voice and seminal Blues & Blues Rock Guitar will leave you speechless. It is however, not about his age, his seemingly effortless talent is why we knew he had to join our other guitar heroes on this year’s bill like Buddy Guy, Jeff Beck, Jimmie Vaughan and Gary Clark Jr. Though this is his first trip to our shores he is already a veteran performer, jamming regularly with Tommy Castro, Bernard Allison, Bryan Lee, and Ronnie Baker Brooks, as well as opening for Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Sonny Landreth. It does have to be seen to be believed and YouTube will only get you so far – we can’t wait to welcome, what is sure to be the first of many performances for Matthew Curry at Bluesfest.
