Art of Sleeping cast their “Voodoo” with new single

Brisbane mainstays Art of Sleeping have been kicking around for quite some time now, ensnaring the attention of punters and industry folk alike with their knack for pairing soul-baring lyrics with relentlessly shifting, transformative arrangements. This year, finally, we’ll see a debut album from the 5-piece, who have continued growing outwards from their guitar-folk roots into more experimental territory. It’s called Shake Shiver, it was co-produced by Tom Iansek (Big Scary, #1 Dads) and long-time collaborator of AoS Yanto Browning, and it’ll drop on July 17th – juuuuust in time for their maiden voyage to Splendour in the Grass

Very convenient for us all, none more than the band themselves, who are having an absolute cracker of a year already. As if a spot on the Splendour lineup and a long-awaited LP isn’t enough, Art of Sleeping has now released what I think I can safely call “a total tune” in the form of their new single Voodoo. The track is gritty and soulful, with rousing industrial elements that call some of Trent Reznor’s wonderful non-NIN work to mind. Vocalist Caleb Hodges struggles with the pain of a toxic relationship in the song, and the heartache he expresses is extremely visceral (My heart’s gonna make, gonna make me pay/You treat me cold like a winter). Fittingly enough, he struggles quite literally with a mysterious supernatural woman in the Nelson Alves-directed video (YesYou, Andy Bull, The Paper Scissors). The boys are packing up to tour the single around the nation, kicking off in Canberra on June 5th and going out with a bang at Brisbane’s coolest new venue The Triffid on the 27th. They won’t be stopping in on the GC itself, so if you’re keen on getting down at an Art of Sleeping gig, you can get yourself to Brisbane or Maroochydore if you weren’t quick enough to score a ticket for Splendour.
