Black Rabbit George, the folk and roots project of Tijuana Cartel’s front man Paul George, has announced the imminent release of his much-anticipated debut album ‘Charles’ on 1 March, and is planning to take his treasure trove of heartfelt songs on the road through February and March.
The soulful singer-songwriter impressed music lovers and industry critics alike with his unique yet familiar folk-roots sounds and personal lyrics on early singles such as ‘Black Dog’, ‘Dusty Fingers’, and ‘Wash Away’. Throughout 2017 and 2018, the enigmatic troubadour released three well-received singles from the upcoming album: ‘Pray’, ‘Bring You In’, and ‘Japanese Vintage’, cementing his reputation as an intriguing storyteller.
A five-time finalist at the 2018 Gold Coast Music Awards, Black Rabbit George has produced an album which is an expression of his life as a troubadour with all the transience and vividness of a perpetual traveller.
‘The album was recorded over several years while travelling,” he tells us. “Most of it was recorded in either an Airbnb, a mate’s lounge room, my van or very occasionally, a studio. Most songs I recorded and produced myself with support from my long time collaborator Carey O’Sullivan on a couple of the tracks.”
‘Charles’ will feel familiar to the fans of Black Rabbit George, while also venturing into new territory, experimenting with electronic elements to give a fresh depth of flavour to the sound.
“It still sounds like me although I’ve varied the mediums I use,” says George. “I’ve introduced the occasional synth and drum loop in the recording. In previous work I’ve shied away from anything too computerised but this time I had fun toying with it.”
George’s upcoming East Coast tour will kick off at Agnes Blues, Roots & Rock Festival on 15 February and wind all the way down to Sydney for a show at Lazybones Lounge on 29 March.
The Black Rabbit George trio will hit the East Coast road to promote the release of Charles with a tour presented by PS Music Group. Drummer Adam Felton (Ash
Grunwald) and OJ Newcomb (Band of Frequencies, Xavier Rudd) on the double bass, will once again lend their talents to the equation.
