Burleigh Boardriders, Billabong, Gage Roads Brewing, Club Burleigh and Gold Coast Land Rover are proud to announce the 2020 Single Fin Festival.
The three-day festival is a celebration of surfing heritage and history held from January 10 to 12, 2020. The first surfing event of 2020 will see Burleigh Point packed with spectators and scenes reminiscent of the Stubbies Classic in the late 1970s.
The festival commences with the charity luncheon on January 10 with the Single Fin Classic on the following days. Entries for the Burleigh Boardriders Single Fin Classic filled within 90 minutes of being released online, showing that a place in this historic event is now one of the hottest tickets in town.
Competitors are required to surf on antique pre-1985 single fin surfboards on Burleigh’s iconic point. Among the red hot field of local heroes will be some stars surfing including 2012 World Champion, Joel Parkinson, who will be looking for a third title. But like everyone else on Burleigh Point, it is all about the fun.
“This is the one contest I really enjoy nowadays, “ said Parkinson on the event, “but what makes it so special is the local community enjoying the weekend on Burleigh Point with lots of laughs and good times!”
There is some serious competition with surfers from all over the country coming to compete in the Single Fin Classic, with two wildcards making their way from Indonesia after securing their place in the contest through a sister event in Uluwatu. Many world champions have surfed in the event, and along with Joel Parkinson, 1999 World Champion Mark Occhilupo will be putting on the contest singlet over the two days. Past Champions and rippers like Creed McTaggart, Harrison Roach and Tai Graham will be in the mix as well as Burleigh’s own world tour up-and-comer Liam O’Brien.
There is also a Women’s and Junior Division, showcasing big wave charger Felicity Palmateer, and up and coming Junior surfers like Pascha Luc-Light and Liliana Bowery. For the juniors, some of the groms competing will be surfing borders three times their age. Burleigh Boardriders own Queensland Champions Rico Haybittle and Chez Bos will be out to win at their local break, fresh from the Australian Junior Titles in Western Australia.
It will be a festival atmosphere at Burleigh Point with food and clothing stalls, retro surfboard displays, and live music on the Sunday afternoon all combining for the best party of 2020.
