Bond University recently announced that The Honourable Dr Annabelle Bennett AO SC has been elected as the University’s 8th Chancellor.
Dr Bennett will succeeds Dr Helen Nugent AO after she retires as Bond’s 7thChancellor, having served the maximum permissible term under the Constitution.
Dr Bennett will bring to the University a wide range of significant and relevant skills in addition to her vast experience.
She retired as a Judge of the Federal Court of Australia in March 2016 after a distinguished career in the legal profession.
Dr Bennett initially obtained an honours degree in Science and then completed a PhD in Cell Biology. Later, she studied Law and practised as a barrister. She became a Senior Counsel in New South Wales in 1994.
In addition to her Federal Court appointment, Dr Bennett’s appointments have included being the President of the Copyright Tribunal of Australia, Arbitrator of the Court of Arbitration for Sport, Presidential Member of the Administrative Appeals Tribunal and Additional Judge of the Supreme Court of the ACT. She is recognised globally for her expertise in intellectual property law.
In addition to her outstanding legal background, Dr Bennett possesses a very strong understanding and experience in higher education, having served as Pro Chancellor at the Australian National University for over a decade. She has also served as Chairman of the National Health and Medical Research Council.
Bond’s Vice Chancellor and President Professor Tim Brailsford said that the University was excited at the prospect of Dr Bennett’s appointment.
“Annabelle will bring an extraordinary depth of understanding of both higher education and several disciplines that are very important to Bond. Her interests in such diverse fields such as health sciences and law will bring a new perspective on multidisciplinary studies.”
Professor Brailsford also noted with sadness the retirement of Dr Nugent.
“Helen has been an extraordinary ambassador for Bond University. She has most ably led the University and our Council through a challenging period in higher education, resulting in Bond being in a very strong position with an exciting future”.
Dr Nugent’s contribution will be formally recognised in a series of events during April.
The outgoing Chancellor Dr Nugent said the University is very fortunate to have secured Dr Bennett as its 8th Chancellor.
