Drawing from life at Hinge Gallery

Life Drawing is a very old and traditional form of practicing art. There is something really unique and sophisticated about the whole process. Nothing can replace drawing from life.

The bubbling pool of creativity that is the Dust Temple’s Hinge Gallery, has played host to life drawing sessions since September 2014 but this weekend they’re doing something a little different with a full day Sunday Session focused on the art. The session runs Sunday 26 July from 9.00am – 4.00pm with two models – one in the morning and one in the afternoon.

Rebecca Cunningham is the talented, young, local artist who facilitates the session.

“I have a great love for art and to practice drawing from life is a tool that all great artists should have,” she said. “However not everyone has access to drawing a nude body.”

That was the drive for her setting up a regular life drawing event.

“I have been running life drawing sessions at the Dust Temple for almost a year, and we have a solid crew that attend the twice a month event,” Rebecca said.

“I believe that Life Drawing is not a lost art just a buried one, and I want to create more access to this practice for local artists,” she said, while promising more events to come.

Life Drawing Sunday Session

The sessions are non tutorial, so there’s no process to actual      ly teach life drawing skills, but Rebecca encourages those who’ve never done it before to give it a go.

“The life drawing sessions are an ‘all welcome’ event, you may not have drawn since you were a child or you could draw every day, it does not matter,” Rebecca said. “We are not exclusive in any way, step out of your familiar box and get creative. Being creative is good for the soul.”

The life drawing Sunday session is a seven hour event and ideal for those wanting to experience painting with a live nude model and working on poses with a longer duration than a typical life drawing session. The Sunday session costs $75 for the whole day and is BYO materials and easel. RSVP by 22 July with deposit.

If that sounds like a tough place to start, Rebecca also runs life drawing sessions every first and third Thursday at Dust Temple’s Hinge Gallery as well and those sessions are just $20 and run 6.30 – 9.00pm.
