Five spring comedy events you don’t want to miss


There’s nothing unusual about funny stuff going on here on the GC. But as we were putting together this month’s mag, a few stand-out comedy came to our attention and we wanted to make sure you knew about them as early as possible.

Here’s our spring recommendations for funny-bone tickling and belly-laugh rumbling.

Currumbin RSL goes Green | Thursday 1 October

He’s the funniest stand-up in Britain according to The Sun. Jeff GreenJeff-Green-01 is an award-winning British funny guy, and a well known face and voice on Australian TV and radio since he first performed at Melbourne International Comedy Festival way back in 1996. He’s starred on the BBC’s Celebrity Masterchef, Never Mind the Buzz Cocks and Have I
got News for You and his first TV stand up show Jeff Green Live was recorded at Her Majesty’s Theatre and watched by more than three million viewers.

But the good news is, that Jeff Green will appear this month at Currumbin RSL for a night of Side Splitting Comedy. He’ll be supported by Marty Lappan – who’s performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and starred in He Died with a Felafel in his Hand.

Bogan Bingo at Fishos | Friday 9 October

BOGAN BINGO returns to Fishermans Wharf, presented by The Sit Down Comedy club. Let your inner BOGAN out and dress up in your best bogan attire for this half game show, half party. A Bingo caller will shout out the numbers and a DJ will play songs from the 80s and 90s that rhyme with those numbers. Jokes, tributes and air guitar competitions and it’s set to be a rollicking, bogan-filled evening of laughs. And mullets. And we hear there’s a courtesy bus. Yes!

Tahir in the Basement | Friday 16 October

Best known as ‘Habib’ in the SBS series Pizza and the movie Fat Pizza, Tahir is one of Australia’s busiest comedians. He’s also one of the best – if awards are anything to go by. He’s previously been named Comedian of the Year and nominated for a Logie. He’s a bit of a cult favourite – an integral member of the team for the films Fat Pizza, Housos vs Authority, Fat Pizza vs Housos and Swift and Shift Couriers. He’s in talks to host his own TV show and has signed to star in and produce his own movie with production to commence shortly. And we’re thrilled to let you know he’ll be here on the Gold Coast this month. He’s Comedy Tahirstopping in at Comedy in the Basement on Friday 16 October.

Felicity Ward brings comedic edge to Byron | Monday 19 October

At the 2008 Melbourne Fringe, Felicity Ward debuted her full-length stand-up comedy show, Felicity Ward’s Ugly As A Child Variety Show. The autobiographical show went on to become a commercial and critical hit, and was awarded Most Outstanding Newcomer and then nominated for the same award at the following Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Since then, she’s appeared on numerous television shows including Spicks and Specks, Thank God You’re Here, Laid, Good News Week, The Ronnie Johns Half Hour, No Laughing Matter, The Best of Sydney Comedy Festival Gala and the Oxfam Melbourne International Comedy Festival Gala. And this mFelicity-Ward-2
onth, she’ll appear at Byron Brewery – her first Byron Bay show, direct from Edinburgh Festival. She’ll be joined on stage by Ellen Briggs and Mandy Nolan as MC.

Thirty years at Jupiters with comedy gold | Friday 13 November

Jupiters’ next Laugh Your Pants Off will mark the property’s 30th anniversary. The amazing line-up of comedians will no doubt have you roaring with laughter and includes Akmal Saleh, Merrick Watts and Lawrence Mooney. Akmal Saleh is known for his quick wit and side-splitting stories and his career has gone from strength to strength with regular television appearances on hit shows like Rove, The Glasshouse and Thank God You’re Here.

Equally brilliant, one of Australia’s most well-known names Merrick Watts first came to the public’s attention as one half of Merrick and Rosso. Over the past few years Merrick has branched out, most notably showing his talent as an actor with roles in Underbelly – The Tale of Two Cities, and Working Dog’s Logie Award Winning comedy/drama satire, The Hollowmen on ABC TV. Lawrence Mooney is a stand-up comedian widely regarded by fans and peers as one of the funniest of the funniest. His brutally honest and hilarious insights have earned him Best National Act 2013 Perth CLawrence Mooney webomedy Festival and Best Comedy 2011 at the Melbourne Fringe Festival.

Lawrence has also returned to TV with his own show, Dirty Laundry Live on ABC2. Dean Atkinson, Christopher Wayne, Nick Cody, Mick Meridith, Soulla Pants and Greg Sullivan are also on the bill. Laugh Your Pants Off takes place Friday 13 November.
