Flickerfest tour set to electrify HOTA in 2020

Following its mammoth ten day festival held in Bondi in January, Flickerfest organisers are excited to be bringing its National Tour to HOTA, Home of The Arts on the Gold Coast, showcasing the Best of Australian Shorts programme.

The Flickerfest programmes present a selection of entertaining, inspiring and award-winning films hand-picked from the festival’s record 3,500 entries, giving local Flickerfest audiences the first look at the hottest shorts in the world today.

Highlights from the Best of Australian Shorts include ‘Rebooted’, the fabulous winner of the Best Australian Short animation award at Flickerfest 2020. Directed by Michael Shanks, ‘Rebooted’ tells the story of a movie-star who just so happens to be a stop motion animated skeleton monster, coming to terms with aging. Also showing will be the charming short ‘Chicken’ from Alana Hicks, who was awarded Best Direction in an Australian Short Film at the Flickerfest Awards Ceremony in Bondi this year.

As always, Gold Coast will be represented on the silver screen.

‘Featherweight’ (pictured) was directed by Sam Lara, who completed a Bachelor of Film and Television at Bond University in 2015, where she decided to commit completely to a career in the film industry and is now working full-time as an Assistant Director on feature films, TV series and TVCs. Sam has filmmaking in her blood and grew up immersed in the film industry, traveling with her documentary-filmmaker parents. This stunning short, the story of stubborn and scrawny 13-year-old Tas who gets dumped on her father’s doorstep and turns to boxing in an unlikely and desperate attempt to win him over, was recently awarded Best Narrative Short at the Vegas Movie Awards.

The hilarious ‘It’s Christmas’, starring Gary Sweet, was produced by Kyle McCallion who grew up locally in Upper Coomera. Kyle, who studied at both Upper Coomera State College and Oxenford State School, will be in attendance at the screening to introduce his film.

A visual poem based on Orpheus and Eurydice, ‘Orpheate’, Directed by Ruby Bell and Produced by Mandy Walker (cinematographer for Hidden Figures and Baz Luhrmann’s ‘Australia’) is a modern day take on the beloved Greek myth which follows a young musician’s journey to the underworld in search of his lover lost to a fatal snake bite. Both Ruby and Mandy, currently working on Baz Luhrmann’s new Elvis film on the Gold Coast, will be in attendance at the screening.

Starting at just $14, Flickerfest 2020 are set to be the hottest tickets in town when it tours the Gold Coast in 2020. For updates on touring dates, visit flickerfest.com.au, and you can view more Flickerfest 2020 Tour film trailers & stills here.
