Fretfest founder Al Buchan summoned to New York

Southport resident and local music company director Al Buchan has been summoned to Carnegie Hall to sing.

He’ll perform with 70 member vocal chorus The Blenders as part of the Total Vocal Concert led by Deek Sharon.

Al Buchan is one of the members of The Blenders. He has made a life out of helping young musicians take important early steps in their music careers but he only joined The Blenders last year. Buchan says that he hopes to make contacts in America that will lead to the establishment of a music exchange program and create more opportunities for young Queensland songwriters.

Buchan won first prize in the North Tamworth Bears Talent Quest ahead of 25 other entrants and hosted the teen singer/songwriter showcase, fRETfEST.

Buchan will also visit Nashville Tennessee on his way to New York later this month before landing in New York on 21 March.

“Soooooo exciting,” Buchan said when we asked about the trip. “I’ve been researching how admirably indie musicians are looked after in America and it just blows my mind.”

“I am taking my guitar with me and I have arranged to play a couple of the Open Mic nights in Nashville. I will also be meeting with music industry personnel to gain an understanding and appreciation of the advances and heights to which the American music market goes in support of their native songwriters, especially teenagers.”

“So I am going to come back full of ideas and my goal is, ultimately, to implement changes in our own industry here at home. That’s my mission,” Buchan said.

From all of us here at Blank, safe travels Al.
