Rooftop parties, cocktails and Clueless: Gold Coast Film Fest drops special events program

Grab your friends and grab your tickets – the 19th annual Gold Coast Film Festival (GCFF) is officially back in action with the launch of its special events program now revealed.

From a secret rooftop cinema screening of Clueless to a Pink Party celebrating the 20th anniversary of cult classic Legally Blonde, the jam-packed special events program invites movie lovers to escape to a world of film on the Gold Coast, whether it’s on a rooftop, in a brewery, or even in the sky.

“Gold Coast Film Festival is known for bringing film to life through its unique pop-up cinema events in beautiful Gold Coast locations and we’re excited to be able to showcase these events again in 2021,” says Gold Coast Film Festival Director, Aimée Lindorff.

“Our special events are about creating fun and unexpected experiences that reimagine what it means to see a film. Whether you’re under the stars at a secret rooftop location, enjoying a pink cocktail poolside at QT Gold Coast while reliving Legally Blonde, or snuggled up watching family-favourites at Skypoint, there’s really something for everyone to enjoy.”

Tourism Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said the 19th annual Gold Coast Film Festival’s special events program was another reason to be on the Gold Coast for Easter.

“For anybody wanting to live it large with all the glamour of the big screen this Easter, then the Gold Coast is the perfect long weekend Queensland escape,” says Minister Hinchliffe.

“This special events program showcases the Gold Coast’s glamour and reputation as Australia’s film making capital. The Palaszczuk Government supports events like this because we know they bring visitors, highlight the Gold Coast’s visitor experiences, support jobs and our COVID-19 economic recovery.”

The launch of the special events program offers cinephiles plenty to get excited about before the full program is announced on 10 March, including decadent foodie pairings at QT Gold Coast’s QT Bites: Eat The Screen, and a pop-up cinema at Burleigh Brewing Co. celebrating home-grown talent with showings of Two Hands (starring a young Health Ledger and Rose Byrne) and Margot Robbie’s Oscar-nominated performance in I, Tonya.

Elle Woods fans should book in early for Legally Blonde’s 20th Anniversary Pink Party, as the ticket price includes a ‘Bend and Schnapps’ cocktail and ‘Warner’s Weiner’ hotdog on arrival to get you in the mood. If plaid is more your thing, pull up a ‘Cher’ at Clueless on the Rooftop.

Speaking of rooftops, Sky High Cinema will take your movie viewing experience to new heights, with family-friendly screenings across two weekends during the school holidays. Kids and parents alike can catch their favourite ‘flying’ flicks including Dumbo, Aladdin, How to Train Your Dragon and more, from the lofty vantage point of the Q1’s Skypoint Observation Deck.

For serious screen queens (and kings), Music and Movie Trivia at the QT Gold Coast is sure to put your film knowledge to the test, while the must-attend Women in Film Lunch presented by Screen Queensland returns for an afternoon of networking and speakers celebrating the stories, perspectives, and experiences of women working in the Australian screen industry, including a three-hour buffet in the gorgeous surrounds of Bazaar, QT Gold Coast.

The special events are part of a wider program of more than 100 films, panels, parties, and pop-up events across the Gold Coast and online from 14-25 April.

The Gold Coast Film Festival will operate under stringent COVID safety guidelines, providing patrons a safe environment to enjoy their favourite films.

The Gold Coast Film Festival is supported by the Queensland Government through Screen Queensland and Tourism and Events Queensland and features on the It’s Live! in Queensland events calendar. The Gold Coast Film Festival is supported by the City of Gold Coast and Major Events Gold Coast.
