Yoga is an ancient, holistic approach to health and wellbeing that promotes harmony between individuals, their community and their natural environment. The asanas of yoga can increase your flexibility, strengthen and tone muscles, balance hormones, cleanse and flush the internal systems of your body, calm your mind and reduce stress. Last year the United Nations declared 21 June the International Day of Yoga to raise worldwide awareness of the many benefits of yoga.
To celebrate the very first International Day of Yoga the Australian School of Meditation and Yoga held a free community Yoga Day Festival at various locations across Australia which featured inspiring local teachers, artists, presenters and musical performers. Beautiful Burleigh Heads was the location of the inaugural Gold Coast event.
I gathered my mat and my family and off we went to join in the festivities. While my husband and son played on the swings my daughter (3yrs) and I – together with over 1400 other participants – followed the asana class and chilled out to the melodies of Ashraya and Pralad and The Chants.
It was a beautiful afternoon to relax and breathe deeply by the ocean or rock your asana to the music. With kids’ yoga and meditation, eco art and craft, storytime, songs and yoga games, it was a great afternoon for the whole family.
