When 350 delegates arrive at Burleigh Brewing Co. for the 2016 Gold Coast Music Awards this week, they’ll be met by the sounds of Katie Who on stage. Which is kinda weird, because she didn’t even nominate for an award this year.
Katie first came to prominence as the winner of Buskers by the Creek’s Battle of the Buskers in 2014 where she scored a heap of gigs as well as an EP recorded at Lovestreet. That EP was launched to a capacity crowd at Dust Temple and then toured down the east coast.
Katie and her brand new band (Ryan Grantham on bass and Anton Rize on drums) will open for Hanlon Brothers who are the house band for the sold-out Gold Coast Music Awards, being held this Thursday 16 June.
Katie said that since being a finalist for Emerging Artist of the Year in last year’s awards she took some time off from writing.
“I went through a lot of heart break and lost myself a little,” she explained.
But she took part in the Bluesfest Busking Competition earlier in the year which she said inspired her to write the first new song in nearly 12 months.
“I debuted it at Bluesfest on the busking stage, and the fire was relit inside my soul.” Katie said.
“I knew there and then that music had to be my number one priority above all else.”
So she took to the hills. Literally. She moved to a mountain top in North Tumbulgum and wrote four new songs in a week. She also found some band mates.
“I started jamming with a bass player (Ryan Grantham) and a drummer (Anton Rize) about a month ago, and also began playing electric guitar,” she said.
“Now I am going to record an album with them over the coming months and I thought I should bring them with me to the awards night.”
As well as playing GC Music Awards, Katie will release her single Windows at Miami Marketta on 16 July with plans for an album to be released in early 2017.
“My love and unstoppable passion for music has evolved to a new level. I am inspired, excited, and ready,” Katie said.
Which is lucky, because pretty much the whole Gold Coast music industry will be watching her on Thursday night. No pressure or anything.
