Mitchells Fold is a unique, boutique group that combines country, Celtic and folk to create their distinctive sound. Currently the band is preparing for their upcoming gig at the Canungra Services Club on 8 September. We spent a lazy afternoon with band members Robin Mitchell, Suzy Mitchell and Emmy Lou Goodwin at the Burleigh Waters Tavern where Mitchells Fold runs regular jam sessions on the fourth Sunday of every month.
Where did the name Mitchells Fold come from?
The name Mitchells Fold is taken from our surname Mitchell and Fold pertains to our family as well. Mitchell’s Fold is also the place name of a stone circle in Shropshire, England which is very dear to our hearts. We officially formed in 2014 even though we have been playing together in many different incarnations since 2012. We tour around South East Queensland.
What are some of your musical influences?
Robin: My primary influence was from my older brother, who became a record dealer in the United Kingdom. He would bring home a diverse range of music for me to listen to every week. My other influences were primarily celtic, country, bluegrass, folk music and growing up in the 1960s.
Suzy: My influences come from a wide variety of music and people. My father was booking agent for one of the local clubs, so I grew up around lots of diverse live music, and everyone we knew listened to the radio. There was a lot of good music around in the 1960s and 1970s.
Emmy Lou: Throughout my childhood and into my teenage years, I remembers my mum’s involvement. Later I participated in stage plays and musicals, spanning the decades of walking the boards. I am probably more folk and blues orientated now, but influenced by anything that’s a bit different. We all agree that good music can be anything that is done well, with passion and commitment. We bring our own influences to our original and cover music.
Where do you find inspiration for your original music?
We write individually and collectively, and Robin has co-written some of the songs with a friend. Our inspiration comes from personal experiences and everyday life. We currently perform up to nine original songs in our sets with more songs in the pipeline. Alongside the well-known covers, not so well known covers, jigs and traditional Irish/Folk music. We host the Burleigh Waters Tavern jam session every fourth Sunday and we regularly visit open mic sessions around the Gold Coast area.
