The Gold Coast’s very own ‘Mistress of Soul’, Sally Sa, is back with her unique flavour of smoky jazz, hip hop and neo-soul music to bring second single ‘Mama’ to urban purists of Australia.
Having spent time working her craft travelling the country as an M.C honing her free styling skills, Sa set her foundations in hip hop and roots music. Combine these life experiences with inspirations such as Lauryn Hill, Erykah Badu and Amy Winehouse, and you have a rich and sassy blend of music that will fill the hole in your soul.
This is not to say that ‘Mama’ is all rainbows and unicorns, in fact Sa states the song “was inspired by the so called ‘tick list’ of things we are expected to go through in life, the pressures to become/marry/success etc”. Real life shit. Which is how Sa wants the audience to experience her music, “I’d like the listener to connect and hear themselves in the music, but ultimately the song is theirs for their interpretation, for them to hear what they need to hear”.
Sally Sa has an eclectic sound and honesty in her music that may be hard to capture within one genre but it’s one you won’t forget in a hurry. With a new emergence of neo soul artists entering the music sphere, it’s refreshing to hear a woman with as much talent and musical sensibility as Sa living a humble life on the Gold Coast. Keep an eye out for her upcoming shows, and check out ‘Mama’ below, ahead of its official release tomorrow.
