No Lights No Lycra

You can’t start a fire without a spark, even if you’re just dancing in the dark – Bruce Springsteen

Imagine if you will, a dance hall with polished hardwood floors, adorning 12” speakers ready to blast tunes to an enthusiastic mob of eager dancers. The only catch… the hall is completely dark, without a ray of light to be seen. This is the experience of No Lights, No Lycra – Gold Coast, which is hosted by the lovely ladies, Karleen Harrington & Diana Raczek.

Taking stance wherever comfortable, the lights may have been turned off, but my heart was certainly switched on. Any apprehension I’d felt beforehand completely dissipated the moment the thumping beat of the opening track reverberated through eternal darkness. The atmosphere was electric!

As eyes adjusted to the absence of light, silhouette dance partners encouraged each other to push outrageous moves to the next level; kicking, shuffling and twirling like raging stars of a Fat Boy Slim track. With music-possessed bodies we danced the hour away like uprooted trees tossing too-and-fro in cyclonic surges of human energy.

The real beauty in letting go; no longer worrying about what other people think, is that you gain a new sense of uninhibited pride, feeling comfortable with who you are, and why you’re there in the first place.

Being surrounded by likeminded people is truly empowering. By the end of what felt like the shortest hour in the week, you leave feeling energized, synergized, and totally ready to tackle anything life throws your way.

Now men, this isn’t just an experience for the ladies. Feel free to unhinge yourself from the daily grind, shaking off all restraints and hindrances holding you back.

With the spirit of Fred Astaire, you’ll be cutting shapes like a Dominos pizza boy, slicing, dicing and burning holes in the D-floor every Monday night!

Held Monday nights at 6:30pm in the Masonic Hall, 6 First Avenue, Burleigh Heads. You can find NLNL on Facebook, or visit

My only advice: Wear comfy shoes, and bring plenty of water!
