This month, Prudence from Off The Record spoke with Grinspoon guitarist, Pat Davern about all things books and music. Believe it or not, Pat is not only an avid reader, as well as a truly amazing guitarist, but he has also written a children’s book following the birth of his daughter. Is there anything this man can’t do?!
Are you reading anything at the moment? Tell me a little bit about it.
I’m reading Boy Swallows Universe at the moment and am really enjoying it. The way the author transports you back to Queensland in the 1980’s is incredible. Great characters and a highly engaging story, it is definitely an Australian classic in the making.
Favourite authors/genres? I hear you have written a children’s book, could you tell me a little more about that and where and when the inspiration for it all started?
I’ve always enjoyed Michael Connelly’s crime books, the Bosch series in particular are real page turners. Having spent a lot of time in Los Angeles over the years makes these great reads as you feel like you’re right back there in the thick of it.
Following the birth of my daughter, I was actually inspired to write a children’s musical called ‘Alexander The Elephant in Zanzibar’, which was then adapted into a picture book. I guess I wanted her to have something that I’d created and that she could really engage in. I loved doing it and hopefully can elite a few more in the future.
What makes you pick up a book? (cover or word of mouth)
Word of mouth mostly, but sometimes a review in a newspaper or magazine. Often it’s at an airport bookstore, looking for something to get me through a flight…
If I came over to your place, what books would I find on your coffee/bedside table? ALDI catalogue or Proust or…?
Lots of crime, Australiana, music and fashion (my wife’s collection). Let’s just say it is a real mixed bag of all genres.
A world without books and music would be….
A place most of us would not want to be.
