Single review: Benny D Williams | Cleanse Your Soul

Those with an ear to the ground for unique, quality and original Gold Coast sounds would no doubt already be familiar with the name Benny D Williams. A one-man multi instrumental virtuoso and studio wizard operating out of his local beach side shack, Williams has ridden rapidly to prominence over the past few years off the back of his mesmerising live performances and kaleidoscopic tapestry of layered sounds, as evidenced on his fantastic 2016 album, ‘Digital Caveman’.

A dual finalist at the Gold Coast Music Awards, the soulfully solo loop guru is gearing up to shortly unveil a highly anticipated new album (and a concept album at that), entitled ‘Cities Of Gold’. And in the lead up, he’s just dropped a brand spanking new single, which goes by the title of ‘Cleanse Your Soul’.

Williams is clearly a performer who subscribes to the adage of never doing things by halves, and there’s certainly nothing half-arsed about ‘Cleanse Your Soul’. Free-wheeling and breezily strummed acoustic guitars combine with a hypnotic groove to lay down the mantra for an aural saunter down a somewhat island vibe.

With some smooth, multi-tracked vocal harmonies of the ‘whoo’ variety riding behind his sunny proclamation to “cleanse your soul”, the track positively radiates cruisy summer surfing vibes across its three minute duration. Or to lay down it’s mantra by quoting a line: “I’ve got a feeling that the ocean’s gonna wash your blues away”.

Half way through a percussive break and electrified riff emerges for a brief peak, before the track saunters back into its head nodding groove and rides on back to shore.
