The SEED program has been discovering and showcasing some of the best upcoming acts Queensland has to offer over the last few years with their annual compilation CD and artist services to boot. But you may not be across some of the artists currently involved in the program.
And we’re here to help, so here are our favourite six SEED artists you should add to your music playlists right now.
Where the realms of science fiction and the 80s collide you’ll find eccentric duo Tesla Coils crusading their dark, electronic style. Tesla Coils brings together haunting baritone vocals, end-of-the-world sci-fi lyrics and industrial drum beats to create a truly unique experience. Their odd and infectious sound has seen the duo rise from the underground electronic scene, recently taking out this year’s Emerging Artist of the Year award at the 2017 Gold Coast Music Awards. Since their 2016 debut visual EP ‘Emergence of the Cosmic Monolith’ was released to delighted audiences – complete with its eclectic track selection and innovative self-made film clip – it’s clear these guys aren’t going to stop until their unique brand of electronica has spread across the galaxy.
Pop Rock powerhouse SEYKA combines her delicate vocal style with driven jangly guitars and pop production with gritty rock influences. After years of performing under her own name, Kasey Thompson recently launched SEYKA, the result of years of development and experimentation of her songwriting and performance styles. Having performed around the country at popular venues and festivals, it’s clear SEYKA is onto a winning combination. Recently she supported The Vanns at Nightquarter on the Gold Coast leg of their National Tour, and she shows no sign of slowing down as she prepares to release her debut EP, working with ARIA charting producer Jared Adlam to produce her most refined piece of work to date. If you’re fans of Ali Barter and Alex Lahey, SEYKA’s music is sure to get you buzzing.
Finding that his love of music outweighed his love of cooking this former Junior MasterChef Australia (2010) turned singer, songwriter and producer has hit the electronic pop scene with debut single ‘Magic’. The young Brisbane artist with the highly danceable sound is definitely one you’ll want to keep an eye on. Drawing inspiration from artists such as Porter Robinson and Madeon, it’s clear Lucalion will soon be a name known around town. Lucalion is serving up music far tastier than anything seen on MasterChef.
At the place where blues and pop unite, Josh King stands at the front with his modern take of folk story-telling. Inspired by a mix of artists including John Mayer, Jason Mraz and Ed Sheeran, Josh has spent the last two years developing his sound and what he wants to say. In a push for perfection Josh King has spent countless hours in the recording studio tracking his debut EP, at times even re-writing and re-recording a few songs to capture the emotions and musical prowess that his songs command. Having been performing steadily around the Gold Coast for some time now his debut EP is set to be released later this year to much anticipation.
Daring Alt-Pop songstress MØNIQUE is a newcomer to the scene but with her refreshing and fearless take on pop she’s quickly making a name for herself. Influenced by a wide array of sounds, her music is designed to take you on a journey, packed with swelling guitars, warm punchy drums and rich vocals that hold a surprising depth of sophistication for someone so young. The last year has seen MØNIQUE writing, recording and co-producing her debut EP that sees her collaborate with various likeminded musicians, producers and songwriters to capture an alluring and intoxicating energy throughout her music.
With a kind of raw honesty that is all but lost these days, ROYES’ magnetising performances will let you into a world of quiet chaos fuelled by resounding lyrics and melodies that leave you pondering life’s greatest mysteries. Inspired by Nothing But Thieves, Jeff Buckley and Angus & Julia Stone, ROYES has been busy defining her own path in the Alt-Pop Rock scene here on the Gold Coast, recently rocking out Nightquarter with her entrancing stage show.
The SEED series is coming to a close for another year but with an end of year celebration at Miami Marketta slated for Wednesday 27 September, it will be your last chance to see several of these artist on the same line up on the one night. With free entry and doors opening at 6pm don’t miss your chance to see SEYKA, Josh King, MØNIQUE + ROYES live.
