Stillness In The City

Commit 30 mins to yourself once a month.

That’s the philosophy behind Stillness in the City, a lunchtime class for busy professionals who spend a lot of time sitting.  The lesson is made up of 30 minutes of guided meditation and postural alignment. The idea is to break away from technology, breathe, reboot and reset your posture.  Looking after yourself doesn’t have to be done in your free time, it’s something that can be incorporate into a work day as well.

Creator Roxanne spent years in the corporate world, and found that a walk before and after work and a couple of yoga sessions a week just wasn’t enough.

“I needed to de-stress on my lunch break, unwind and undo the restraint from the four hours the morning had caused by sitting in a chair, narrowly looking at the computer and phone, my legs shortening in the hip flexes, my neck goosing forward, my mind becoming foggy, easily agitated,” she explains.

“I decided to start this company to enable other people in the corporate sector and also general public (like stay at home mums), anyone really, to take that midday break… and really dedicate it to themselves. To strengthen the mind via meditation, to focus, to get the tools to be able to combat stress, anxiety, and cloudiness in the workplace. We also do this in positions that correct the posture.”

“We work out on our bodies a couple of times a week at the gym or outdoors, so we should definitely work on our mind. As for the posture: I think that is pretty self explanatory these days. We do so much sitting and looking ahead and down, not up and around.  It’s really important to get that natural flow back in your body. The relaxation response is a physical state of deep rest that changes the physical and emotional responses to stress.”

Stillness in the City is held behind the Arts Centre between the lake and the river. The organisers provide the yoga mats and everything that is required.  Best of all, you can even wear your work clothes, making it easier to duck out of work and duck right back, refreshed and rejuvenated.

Stillness in the City runs on the first Tuesday of every month.  The next class is Tuesday, 5 July 2016 from 12.30pm to 1.00pm
The Mums and Bubs class runs on the first Wednesday of every month.  The next class is Wednesday, 6 July from 12.30pm to 1.00pm
