Gold Coast via Coffs artist YT Dingo – also known as the courageous choreographer – Travers Ross has entered the musical fray in full Michael Jackson meets Linkin Park mode. His new single and video ‘Shipwrecked’ is an insane offering for a debut and the team he’s brought together higlights the deep connections he has across the City’s creative community.
Travers has collaborated with Dave Atkins (Resin Dogs/Wolfmother) on drums, Rama Damosi on guitar, Jayman Leigh Drahm (BLK Cockatoo) in production and dance and Daniel Cox (Nine Sons of Dan) also performs in the live act on guitar.
He says YT Dingo is his life explored through original music, dance, film and whatever other expressions help him reveal his truths.
“At the moment, it’s being performed online through music, film and dance. YT DiNGO live is coming soon,” he said.
It’s a long and complicated story as to how the group came together. Travers moved in with Rama in the Tweed Mountains waking up to “heart-wrenching riffs being played in the lounge-room.” He took half-written recordings to Ben Ely from Regurgitator who introduced him to Dave Atkins. Dan Cox and Travers went to school together in Coffs Harbour.
“Every dude I would say joined because they know I’m committed and they can feel the hunger and drive I’m flowing with,” Travers told Blank Gold Coast.
“Now I’ve got my Dingo Pack/ Band/ Dancers/ Production squad to back me including four other male dancers of cultural diverse backgrounds… African, Indian, Asian and European/ Arabian. AND WE ARE COMING,” he said.
Travers also comes to the project with serious Hollywood credentials, having worked with the likes of Snoop Dogg and Pharrell Williams and says it was through this work he found his desire.
“It’s what I wanted to do, yet I was continually supporting others’ music and it was like they showed me how,” he said. “So I came home and I was also choreographing for Australian rapper 360 feat. Gossling’s Song of the Year performance ‘Boys Like You”’at the ARIA AWARDS and again they were doing what I was hungry for. I’m so thankful for these experiences and what they showed me I was ready for.”
Travers was made for performance. Apart from being called to work in remote Aboriginal communities time and time again, he’s had stints choreographing for ‘So You Think You Can Dance Australia’ and has played Splendour in the Grass and Falls Festival. He’s walked the red carpet for a film festival at the Chinese Theatre in Hollywood for a film he was the lead in and toured the world with Stalker Theatre breakdancing on stilts.
“It’s good to be home and finally sharing in full who I am, where I’ve been and where I come from,” Travers said.
‘Shipwrecked’ is a trilogy—three tracks and music videos that are an art piece through film. Following the first song’s release will be ‘Thrill of the Chase’ which has already been shot and is currently being edited. ‘The Wicked Rest’ will follow based on the idea of a human chessboard with the masculine vs the feminine.
We’ll have to wait a few months for the project’s live debut though.
“That will be August at the best venue on the GC,” Travers said, “to be announced soon.”
“That will follow our debut at a big Byron-based festival that I can’t mention yet.”
